Definition

For coverage purposes, metro Atlanta is Atlanta, GA together with every incorporated community within 96 miles that is closer to Atlanta than to any other metro anchor — 14 communities and about 1,112,484 people beyond the core city. Communities are assigned to their nearest anchor, so the boundaries follow travel distance rather than county lines.

Geography

The anchor sits at 33.7490°, -84.3880°. Coverage extends in 6 compass directions from it, reaching 96 miles at its furthest. The largest surrounding community is Columbus, GA — 202,824 people, 95.5 miles south.

Climate

Between October and April the Atlanta area averages an overnight low of 44.9°F and reaches 10°F at its coldest, with 105 days below 45°F — about 3.5 months. A cat’s thermoneutral zone starts around 86°F against a typical indoor 64–72°F, so those are the months an indoor cat here is actively hunting for a heat source.
