Definition

For coverage purposes, metro Chicago is Chicago, IL together with every incorporated community within 86 miles that is closer to Chicago than to any other metro anchor — 45 communities and about 2,961,540 people beyond the core city. Communities are assigned to their nearest anchor, so the boundaries follow travel distance rather than county lines.

Geography

The anchor sits at 41.8781°, -87.6298°. Coverage extends in 7 compass directions from it, reaching 86 miles at its furthest. The largest surrounding community is Aurora, IL — 199,963 people, 36.5 miles west.

Climate

Between October and April the Chicago area averages an overnight low of 32.9°F and reaches -7.4°F at its coldest, with 167 days below 45°F — about 5.5 months. A cat’s thermoneutral zone starts around 86°F against a typical indoor 64–72°F, so those are the months an indoor cat here is actively hunting for a heat source.
