Do Cats Get Cold? What the Temperature Actually Means to Them

Print Cat Covey throw on a bed, cat at the foot-end cave

Yes, and at temperatures most people would describe as comfortable.

The numbers

A cat's thermoneutral zone is roughly 86–97°F (30–36°C). Most homes sit at 64–72°F. That gap is not trivial — it means a cat is mildly cold indoors for most of the year, which is why heat-seeking is a full-time occupation rather than a winter one.

Signs a cat is cold

Tucking paws and tail under the body, sleeping curled tightly rather than stretched, seeking laps and radiators more than usual, and choosing higher spots where warm air collects.

Who feels it worst

Hairless and thin-coated breeds, kittens, seniors, and cats that are underweight or recovering from illness. A senior cat that suddenly wants to be on you constantly may be feeling the cold more than it used to.

What actually helps

Enclosure matters as much as insulation — a covered space traps the cat's own body heat. A cave beats an open bed, and a cave in the warm part of the room beats both.

Cat Covey

A 60″ × 50″ throw with a gusseted pouch sewn into the foot end. Your feet go in at the mouth; the cat takes the nest. Micro Mink outside, Sherpa lining, and a semi-rigid entry seam so the pouch stays a cave instead of collapsing.
